Partnerships

Organizations from various sectors partner with CANUE to broaden our reach and engage diverse stakeholders committed to improving urban environmental health research and policy. Below are some examples of our partnerships.

The National Collaborating Centre for Environmental Health (NCCEH) is one of six National Collaborating Centres created to foster linkages within the public health community. It aims to be an indispensable resource for environmental health practitioners and policy-makers across Canada. It focuses on health risks associated with the physical environment and identifies evidence-based interventions to mitigate those risks. NCCEH helps disseminate data and resources produced by CANUE to its large network of partners and stakeholders.

Green Communities Canada (GCC) is a leader of community-based climate action since 1995. GCC works together with non-profit organizations from across the country to advance transformative, equitable, and lasting change. As a member-supported organization, GCC’s mission is to connect community-based climate action groups through a national network to share resources, co-create innovative programming, and elevate their collective impact. CANUE is a partner in GCC’s Equity Mapping & Participatory Planning project, which supports local organizations across Canada in planning for and implementing equitable green infrastructure projects in partner communities.

Google’s Environmental Insights Explorer (EIE) is a freely available data and insights tool that uses exclusive data sources and modeling capabilities to help make their communities more sustainable, resilient, and adaptive to climate change. The EIE initiative has shared its Tree Canopy Cover data with CANUE to improve the estimate of vegetation cover in Canadian communities.

Partners for Action (P4A) at the University of Waterloo is a research initiative that seeks to empower Canadians to become flood resilient by promoting awareness and preparedness actions that are inclusive and evidence-based. CANUE partners with P4A to visualize urban exposure to flood hazards using Natural Resources Canada’s Flood Susceptibility Index (FSI) data. Together, we have produced a residential flood exposure data layer to support multi-hazard risk assessment and decision-making.

Gateway Exposome Coordinating Center (GECC) advances research on the various environmental exposures over the life course — known as the “exposome” — that affect Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) and AD-Related Dementias (ADRD) risk, resilience, and disparities. The GECC aims to address issues of accessing and sharing exposome data among researchers by facilitating collaboration and consensus-building across disciplines, and serving as a hub for collecting, organizing, and sharing exposome data for AD/ADRD research. CANUE contributes to the GECC’s objectives by helping identify research priorities, developing guidance for measuring, harmonizing, and using exposome data, creating novel exposome measures and data, and disseminating open-access resources and products to the broader research community.
