Meeting slides are available here (<a href=\"http:\/\/canue.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/CANUE-Weather-and-Climate-Meeting-May-8-2017.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">CANUE Weather and Climate Meeting May 8 2017<\/a>) and include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>a brief overview of climate, weather and health linkages (Dr. Tim Takaro)<\/li>\n<li>a description of the PAVICS platform (<a href=\"http:\/\/canue.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/PAVICS2016_ENG.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">pavics2016_eng<\/a>) currently under development by OURANOS which aims to improve access to weather and climate data in Canada(Diane Chaumont and Blaise Gauvin St-Denis)<\/li>\n<li>a discussion of types of metrics that may be of interest and proposed next steps (Dr. Johan Feddema)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The near-term goal of the Weather and Climate team is to develop methods for producing weather and climate metrics using <a href=\"https:\/\/cfs.nrcan.gc.ca\/projects\/3\/4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">NRCAN&#8217;s 10km gridded dataset<\/a> that may be relevant to human health, such as:<\/p>\n<p>Base data<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>daily temperature &#8211; minimum, maximum, average, range<\/li>\n<li>daily precipitation &#8211; total millimeters<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Derived data<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>weekly, monthly and annual summary metrics<\/li>\n<li>&#8216;health&#8217; degree days &#8211; number of days above or below identified thresholds of high or low temperatures<\/li>\n<li>potential and actual evapotranspiration &#8211; indicates wetness or dryness and may indicate flood potential<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pacificclimate.org\/data\/statistically-downscaled-climate-scenarios\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">10km downscaled dataset<\/a> from BC&#8217;s Pacific Climate Impacts Consortium (PCIC) was evaluated as well, however, modelled data after 2005 are not adjusted with observed levels and so may reflect model assumptions more than actual conditions.<\/p>\n<p>Mahdi Shooshtari, CANUE&#8217;s Data Scientist, will be working with Diane Chaumont (Team Co-leader) and Blaise Gauvin St-Denis at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ouranos.ca\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">OURANOS<\/a> in early June to develop methods for producing indicators from the data holdings in PAVICS.<\/p>\n<p>Visit the CANUE <a href=\"http:\/\/canue.ca\/feedback\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">feedback page<\/a> or <a href=\"http:\/\/canue.ca\/message-board\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Message Board<\/a> to add your thoughts and advice!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>CANUE\u2019s Weather and Climate team met on May 8th | 2017 to review their research program and upcoming activities.
